Ownership

You own the car

Comparing here is not an application. Rates and eligibility are subject to status and may change.

How finance types differ

Ownership, mileage and final payments are not interchangeable.

Compare finance types →

Personal loan

  • You own the car
  • No mileage limits
  • No balloon payment

HP

  • Own after final payment
  • Often deposit-based
  • No balloon payment

PCP

  • Lower monthly repayments
  • Mileage limit
  • Optional final payment

Refinance

  • Replace an existing agreement
  • May reduce monthly cost
  • Subject to eligibility

Compare the total cost, not just the monthly payment

A longer term can reduce your monthly payment but increase the total amount you repay. With PCP, also consider the optional final payment and mileage limits.

Our methodology

How we compare car finance

We compare products using information published by lenders and providers — APR, deposit, term, total cost and key features — so you can weigh cost and structure side by side.

  • Representative APR
  • Deposit requirement
  • Loan or finance amount
  • Agreement term
  • Monthly repayments
  • Total amount repayable
  • Optional final payment where relevant
  • Soft eligibility checks
  • Early settlement options
  • Mileage limits where relevant
  • Fees and charges
  • Eligibility features

Full detail: Comparison Methodology.

Eligibility

Who typically qualifies?

Car finance approvals depend on creditworthiness, affordability and, for some products, the vehicle itself. Eligibility criteria vary by lender and finance type.

Usually required

  • Aged 18 or over
  • UK resident
  • Verifiable regular income
  • UK current account
  • Ability to afford monthly repayments
  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of address

What may affect your rate or eligibility

  • Credit score and credit history
  • Income stability and employment status
  • Existing debts and financial commitments
  • Loan amount and repayment term
  • Deposit size
  • Vehicle age, mileage and value
  • Whether the product is a personal loan, HP, PCP or refinance
  • Whether the vehicle meets lender criteria

Meeting typical eligibility requirements does not guarantee acceptance. The lender assesses affordability, creditworthiness and, where relevant, the vehicle and finance structure.

Before you apply

Before applying for car finance

Focus on total cost and affordability before a full application.

  1. 1Confirm whether any eligibility tool uses a soft credit search.
  2. 2Decide how much deposit you can comfortably afford.
  3. 3Compare total amount repayable, not only the monthly figure.
  4. 4If considering PCP, note any optional final payment and mileage limits.
  5. 5Confirm the monthly repayment fits your budget.
  6. 6Avoid making several full credit applications in a short period.

Review your credit score before applying.

HP vs PCP vs personal loan

The same car can look cheaper monthly under one structure and cost more overall under another. Use this table to compare ownership, payments and end-of-agreement options.

The cheapest option depends on APR, deposit, agreement length, fees, any final payment and what you plan to do with the vehicle. This is general information, not personalised advice.

Costs

Understanding the real cost of car finance

Do not compare deals on the monthly payment alone. A lower monthly figure can mean a longer term or a larger final payment.

Deposit

Upfront amount paid towards the vehicle.

Representative APR

Example annual rate for comparison. The rate you receive may differ.

Monthly payment

Regular amount due during the agreement.

Total amount payable

Full cost across the agreement — deposit, repayments, interest and relevant fees.

Optional final payment

Larger PCP payment that may apply if you want to keep the vehicle.

Fees and return charges

May include arrangement, option-to-purchase, excess-mileage or condition charges.

Credit checks

Soft and hard credit searches

Soft search

  • Often used by eligibility tools
  • Generally not visible to other lenders
  • Helps estimate chances before a full application

Hard search

  • May be used on a full application
  • Recorded on your credit history
  • Can be considered by future lenders

A soft eligibility check generally will not affect your credit score. A full application may involve a hard credit search. Soft checks do not guarantee acceptance. How credit checks work

Important information

Important things to know

General information only — always confirm current terms with the lender.

  • Missing repayments can affect your credit record.
  • Under some HP, PCP or lease agreements, the vehicle may be at risk if you fail to maintain payments.
  • Longer terms can increase the total interest paid even when monthly payments look lower.
  • Approval depends on affordability and creditworthiness — acceptance is never guaranteed.
