Your deposit amount is used to check minimum-balance eligibility, resolve tiered rates and estimate first-year interest where the product structure allows. Illustrative only — before tax.

Illustrative estimate assuming the displayed AER remains unchanged for 12 months, the balance remains constant and there are no withdrawals. Actual interest may differ due to rate changes, compounding, bonus conditions and account activity. This is not a guaranteed return. For variable-rate accounts, do not treat the estimate as guaranteed.

How FSCS protection works

Eligible deposits are generally protected up to £120,000 per person, per authorised firm. Different savings brands can sometimes share one banking licence, so check the combined protection applying to all accounts you hold.

Choosing a savings account

Which type of savings account may suit you?

Easy access

May suit: Emergency funds and money you may need quickly.

Consider: Rates are usually variable and may change.

Notice account

May suit: Savers who can wait before withdrawing.

Consider: You normally need to give notice before accessing money.

Fixed rate

May suit: Money you can leave untouched for a defined period.

Consider: Early access may be restricted or penalised.

Regular saver

May suit: Building savings through monthly deposits.

Consider: Contribution and withdrawal limits often apply.

Interest rates

AER, fixed vs variable, and bonuses

AER (Annual Equivalent Rate) helps you compare savings accounts by showing the effect of interest over a year. Accounts with similar AERs can still have very different access and bonus conditions.

  • Variable AER can rise or fall after you open the account.
  • Fixed AER stays fixed for the agreed term under the account terms.
  • Some headline AERs include a temporary bonus that later expires.
  • Interest may be paid monthly, annually or at maturity.

Neither fixed nor variable is universally better — it depends on when you may need the money. Always compare the underlying rate and bonus expiry, not just the headline AER.

Protection

How FSCS protection works

Standard FSCS protection

Eligible deposits are currently protected up to £120,000 per eligible person, per authorised firm under current FSCS rules.

Shared banking licences

Different brands can sometimes operate under the same authorised firm, so deposits may share one FSCS limit.

Temporary high balances

Higher temporary protection (currently up to £1,400,000) can apply in certain qualifying circumstances only.

Subject to eligibility. The standard limit applies per eligible person, per authorised firm. Multiple brands can share the same banking licence.

Rate reviews

Should you review your savings rate?

  • Variable rates can change and introductory bonuses can expire.
  • Older accounts can become less competitive over time.
  • Check access restrictions before moving money.

Do not switch solely on headline AER without checking access and product terms.

Before opening a savings account

  • Is the rate fixed or variable?
  • Does the AER include a bonus — and when does it end?
  • How quickly can you withdraw?
  • What is the minimum deposit?
  • Is FSCS protection available, and does the brand share a banking licence?
