Choosing a Cash ISA

Which type may suit you?

Easy access Cash ISA

Best for: People who may need regular access to savings.

Consider: Rates are usually variable.

Fixed rate Cash ISA

Best for: People comfortable locking money away for a set period.

Consider: Early withdrawals may be restricted or penalised.

Notice Cash ISA

Best for: People who can give notice before withdrawing.

Consider: Access is slower than easy-access accounts.

Flexible Cash ISA

Best for: People who may need to withdraw and replace eligible money during the tax year.

Consider: Not all providers offer flexibility.

Rate clarity

AER, fixed and variable rates

AER is the Annual Equivalent Rate — useful for comparing accounts when interest compounds differently. Variable rates can change; fixed rates stay set for the term but early access may be restricted. Bonus rates can expire — always check the end date.

Variable rate

  • Can rise or fall
  • Common on easy-access accounts
  • Often paired with greater access flexibility

Fixed rate

  • Rate fixed for a defined term
  • Usually less flexible
  • Early access may be restricted or penalised

Neither is universally better — it depends on when you may need the money.

ISA transfers

How to transfer a Cash ISA

  1. 1.Choose a new Cash ISA provider
  2. 2.Ask the new provider to start the transfer
  3. 3.New provider contacts your existing ISA provider
  4. 4.Cash is transferred using the formal ISA transfer process
  5. 5.New ISA becomes available
  • Do not normally withdraw the money yourself if your intention is to preserve its ISA status.
  • Current-year and previous-year subscriptions can be treated differently — confirm with providers.
  • Partial transfers may depend on current rules and provider terms.

Flexibility

Flexible Cash ISAs

Some Cash ISAs allow eligible withdrawals to be replaced in the same tax year without permanently using extra allowance — subject to current rules and provider terms. Not all accounts are flexible.

Tax year: 2026/27. Overall adult ISA allowance: £20,000. Full rules and planned changes: ISA hub.

Rules last checked: 16 September 2026

Protection

FSCS and shared banking licences

FSCS

  • Eligible deposits with authorised UK banks, building societies and credit unions may be protected by the FSCS up to £120,000 per eligible person, per authorised institution under current rules — confirm current limits with the FSCS.
  • Cover is not automatic for every brand or product without checking the legal entity and eligibility.
  • FSCS does not guarantee the interest rate or protect against inflation.

Shared banking licences

  • Different brands can sometimes operate under the same banking licence.
  • Shared licences may affect how deposit protection limits apply across accounts you already hold.
  • Check the provider’s regulatory status and legal entity on the FCA Register where relevant.
