Ownership & contributions

Who owns the money — and who can pay in?

Child owns the money Contributors do not retain ownership once money is paid in.

  • A parent or person with parental responsibility normally opens the account for an eligible child under current rules.
  • Parents, grandparents, other family members and friends may contribute where the provider allows payment arrangements.
  • All contributions count towards the same annual Junior ISA allowance (£9,000 for 2026/27).
  • Once paid in, contributions become the child’s money and cannot simply be taken back by the contributor.

Annual Junior ISA allowance for 2026/27: £9,000. This is separate from the adult ISA allowance — see the ISA hub.

Parents, grandparents, family and friends may contribute where the provider allows. All payments use the child’s allowance and become the child’s money. A Junior ISA may not suit you if you need the money before age 18, or if a contributor needs to retain ownership.

Choosing a Junior ISA

Cash or Stocks & Shares Junior ISA?

Cash Junior ISA

  • Holds cash rather than investments
  • No investment-market risk — interest rate may still change
  • May suit shorter or lower-risk saving goals
  • Eligible cash deposits may receive FSCS deposit protection subject to current eligibility and limits (currently up to £120,000 per eligible person, per authorised firm)

Stocks & Shares Junior ISA

  • Holds eligible investments
  • Capital is at risk — value can rise or fall
  • Often used for longer time horizons
  • Platform and investment charges may apply

Neither option is universally better. Consider the child’s time horizon and your tolerance for investment risk.

Age milestones

What happens at ages 16 and 18?

Management rights and withdrawal rights are different under current rules.

At age 16

  • From age 16, the child may take control of managing the Junior ISA under current rules.
  • Management rights are not the same as withdrawal rights — money is still normally locked until age 18.
  • Provider processes for switching the registered contact may vary — check the provider’s terms.

At age 18

  • At age 18, the Junior ISA normally converts to an adult ISA.
  • The young adult generally becomes entitled to access the money, subject to provider terms.
  • The money remains the child’s — parents and other contributors no longer control the funds once access applies under current rules.

Transfers

How Junior ISA transfers work

  1. Step 1

Choose a new Junior ISA provider

  2. Step 2

Ask the new provider to start the formal transfer

  3. Step 3

Existing provider sends cash and/or investments

  4. Step 4

New Junior ISA receives the transfer

  • Use the formal Junior ISA transfer process via the receiving provider under current rules.
  • Cash to Cash and Stocks & Shares to Stocks & Shares transfers are common; Cash to investment transfers may be possible where current rules and both providers permit.
  • Transfer times vary; in-specie support and provider fees may apply.
  • Some providers may not accept transfers in — check before starting.

Protection

How Junior ISA protection differs

FSCS does not work the same way for every Junior ISA balance. Eligible deposit protection (currently up to £120,000 per eligible person, per authorised firm) is not the same as protection against investment-market losses.

Cash Junior ISA

Eligible cash deposits may receive FSCS deposit protection subject to current eligibility and limits (currently up to £120,000 per eligible person, per authorised firm). Confirm the banking licence.

Stocks & Shares Junior ISA

FSCS may apply in certain firm-failure circumstances. It does not protect against normal investment losses or market falls.

FCA authorisation

Check the exact provider and activity on the FCA Register. Authorisation does not make investments risk-free.

Compare options

Junior ISA or another option?

  • vs child savings account — Junior ISAs are normally locked until age 18; child savings may offer more flexible access. Neither is universally better. Compare savings.
  • vs Premium Bonds — Prize-based NS&I savings with different access and return characteristics. Compare current NS&I rules before deciding.
  • vs bare trust — Different legal ownership and tax treatment. This is general information, not personalised legal or tax advice.
