Our methodology

How we compare personal loans

We compare products using information published by UK lenders — focusing on the criteria below so you can weigh cost, flexibility and eligibility features side by side.

Representative APR

Published example rates used for relative cost comparison.

Loan amounts

Published minimum and maximum borrowing ranges.

Loan terms

Available repayment periods from each lender.

Soft eligibility checks

Whether a soft-search eligibility journey is offered.

Funding speed

Typical timescales for receiving funds if approved.

Early repayment options

Whether early settlement is allowed and related terms.

Eligibility

Who typically qualifies?

Eligibility depends on the lender. Typical requirements are a guide only — acceptance is never guaranteed.

Usually required

  • Aged 18+ and UK resident
  • Regular income you can evidence
  • UK current account
  • Ability to afford monthly repayments

May affect your rate

  • Credit score and history
  • Loan amount and term chosen
  • Existing debts and commitments
  • Whether you are a new or existing customer

Meeting typical conditions does not guarantee acceptance or the representative APR shown.

Before you apply

Before you apply

Use this checklist to focus on total cost and affordability before you submit a full application.

  • Compare the total amount repayable, not only the monthly figure.
  • Confirm the monthly repayment fits your budget.
  • Review any early repayment charges in the agreement.
  • Note typical funding timescales if timing matters.
  • Avoid submitting several full applications in a short period.

You can estimate repayments with our loan calculator.

Representative APR

Understanding representative APR

Representative APR is an example rate. Not every applicant receives it — your offered rate depends on creditworthiness and affordability. Compare the total amount repayable, not APR alone.

Total cost example

A loan with a higher monthly repayment over a shorter term can cost less overall than a lower monthly repayment stretched over more years. When two products look similar on APR, check term length and total repayable before deciding.

Credit searches

Soft searches and hard credit searches

Soft eligibility checks and full applications are treated differently on your credit file.

Soft eligibility check

  • Used by many comparison journeys
  • Generally not visible to other lenders
  • Helps estimate eligibility before a full application

Full application

  • May result in a hard credit search
  • Usually recorded on your credit history
  • May be visible to future lenders

A soft eligibility check does not guarantee acceptance. Learn more in How credit checks work.

Important information

Important things to know

General information only — always confirm current terms with the lender.

  • Approval depends on affordability and creditworthiness — acceptance is never guaranteed.
  • Missing repayments may lead to charges and can affect your credit file.
  • Early repayment charges may apply depending on the lender.
  • Only borrow what you need and can comfortably afford to repay.

Loan types

Secured vs unsecured personal loans

Unsecured

  • No property security
  • Often a faster application journey
  • Typically lower borrowing limits than secured options
  • Most common personal loan type

Secured

  • Uses an asset as security
  • May allow larger borrowing amounts
  • Risk of losing the secured asset if repayments are not maintained

Most products on this page are unsecured. If you need finance for a vehicle, see car finance.

Alternatives

Alternatives worth considering

Depending on your goal, another form of credit — or waiting and using savings — may be more suitable than a personal loan.

0% purchase credit cards

May suit a planned purchase you can clear before interest starts, if you qualify and repay on time.

Credit cards

Balance transfer credit cards

Can help if you already have revolving card debt and can clear it within a promotional period.

Credit cards

Overdrafts

Sometimes useful for a very short cashflow gap, but costs can rise quickly if used for longer.

Credit score guides

Credit unions

Local credit unions may offer smaller loans with different criteria. Availability varies by area.

Credit guides

Using savings

If borrowing can wait, using savings may cost less than interest on a new loan — weigh the trade-offs carefully.
