Capital at risk

Important information

  • Capital is at risk.
  • Investments can fall as well as rise.
  • You may get back less than you invest.
  • Fees reduce investment returns.
  • FCA authorisation does not make investments risk-free.
  • FSCS protection does not cover normal market losses.
  • Crypto and leveraged forex products can involve substantially higher risk than mainstream investing.

Capital at risk. Fees shown are platform or account charges unless stated otherwise. Fund charges, dealing costs and FX fees may also apply. Confirm current terms on the provider’s website. This is not personal advice.

Our methodology

How we compare investment platforms

We compare UK platforms and trading apps using provider-published fees, account types, investment choice, features and regulatory status where verified.

  • Fees
  • Account types
  • Investment range
  • Minimum investment
  • Regular investing
  • Research tools
  • Mobile functionality
  • Customer support
  • FCA authorisation
  • FSCS eligibility where applicable
  • Public provider information

Commercial relationships do not determine factual provider information or our editorial guidance. Full detail: Comparison Methodology.

Before you invest

Before opening an investment account

Choose a platform based on your goals, style and total cost — not headline fees alone.

  1. 1Decide your time horizon before choosing investments.
  2. 2Keep an emergency cash reserve before investing.
  3. 3Compare total cost, not only a headline platform fee.
  4. 4Match account type (ISA, GIA or SIPP) to your objective.
  5. 5Consider how often you intend to buy and sell.
  6. 6Only invest money you are comfortable leaving invested.

Near-term cash may suit savings accounts better than investing.

Fees & charges

Understanding investment platform costs

Platform fee

An annual charge for holding investments on the platform.

Dealing fee

A charge for buying or selling certain investments.

Fund charge / OCF

An ongoing charge levied by an investment fund itself.

Foreign-exchange fee

A currency-conversion charge that may apply when buying or selling overseas investments.

Bid-offer spread

The difference between buy and sell prices, which can add an implicit cost on some assets.

Transfer / exit fee

Some providers may charge for certain transfers or account closures.

Compare total ownership costs rather than one headline fee. Lower fees can matter over time, but weigh them alongside investment choice, service and features.

Choosing a platform

The right fit depends on your approach, portfolio size and how often you trade — not a one-size recommendation.

Eligibility

Who can open an investment account?

Most UK investment platforms require you to be aged 18+, a UK resident, and able to pass identity and address checks. Availability of ISA, GIA and SIPP wrappers varies by provider.

Usually required

  • Aged 18 or over
  • UK resident for most UK investment accounts
  • Identity verification
  • Address verification
  • UK bank account
  • National Insurance number where required

Before you open

  • Compare platform fees at your intended portfolio size
  • Check investment range and account wrappers
  • Confirm dealing, FX and fund charges separately
  • Read the provider’s current terms on their website

Opening an account does not guarantee access to every product. Higher-risk or complex investments may need further checks.

Safety & regulation

Regulation and protections to check

Protections differ by firm, product and circumstance. They do not remove investment risk.

FCA authorisation

Check the FCA Register for the firm and the activity offered. Authorisation does not mean an investment is risk-free or suitable for you.

FSCS

Cover may apply in limited cases if an authorised firm fails. It does not protect you from normal investment losses or poor performance.

Client assets

Regulated firms are generally subject to client-money and custody rules. Arrangements differ — check each provider’s disclosures.

Nominee accounts

Investments are often held in a nominee structure on your behalf rather than in your own name on the register.

Important information

Important investing risks

  • Your capital is at risk — you may get back less than you invest.
  • Past performance does not predict future returns.
  • Inflation can reduce the real value of returns.
  • Overseas investments can involve currency risk.
  • Smaller companies, emerging markets, crypto and other high-risk assets can be highly volatile.
  • Leveraged products can magnify both gains and losses.
  • Diversification can reduce concentration risk but cannot remove investment risk.
