Important information

Risks to understand before trading

  • Capital is at risk.
  • Investments can fall as well as rise.
  • You may get back less than you invest.
  • Frequent trading can increase transaction costs.
  • Overseas investments introduce currency risk.
  • Bid-offer spreads affect transaction costs.
  • Fractional-share rights can vary.
  • Leveraged products can magnify losses.
  • Market prices can move quickly.
  • Past performance does not predict future returns.

Capital at risk. Fees and features change. £0 dealing does not necessarily mean trading is cost-free. Some multi-asset apps may offer CFDs or leveraged products separately from share investing — always confirm the product type. This is not personal advice. Confirm current terms on the provider’s website.

Our methodology

How we compare trading apps

We compare UK trading apps using provider-published dealing fees, FX charges, account types, investment choice, features and regulatory status where verified. Comparisons consider: dealing fees, fx charges, platform fees, account types, investment range, fractional shares, order types, regular investing, and related public provider information.

Commercial relationships do not determine factual provider information or our editorial guidance.

  • UK-focused editorial research
  • Provider fees checked against official sources
  • Regulatory status checked where relevant
  • Product features reviewed regularly

Compare options

Trading app vs investment platform

Trading app

  • Usually mobile-first
  • Often lower dealing fees
  • Strong for shares and ETFs
  • Fractional shares commonly available
  • Often simpler for beginners
  • May offer fewer pension / fund options

Investment platform

  • Usually broader investment range
  • Often supports funds, ISAs and SIPPs
  • May offer more research
  • Often better suited to larger or more complex portfolios
  • Can use percentage or flat platform fees

The distinction is not absolute. Many modern providers offer features of both. Compare investment platforms.

Fees & charges

Understanding trading app costs

Dealing fee

Charge for buying or selling an investment.

FX fee

Currency-conversion fee on overseas investments.

Bid-offer spread

Difference between the buying and selling price.

Platform / custody fee

Fee for holding investments or using the platform.

ISA fee

Some providers charge separately for an ISA.

Withdrawal fee

May apply when withdrawing money.

Inactivity fee

Some platforms charge if an account is unused.

Fund OCF

An ongoing charge built into funds or ETFs.

£0 dealing does not necessarily mean trading is cost-free. Spreads, FX charges and execution prices can still affect what you pay. We do not rank execution quality unless reliable comparable data is available.

Safety & regulation

How trading apps are regulated

FCA authorisation

Check that the relevant firm is authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority for the activity being offered. Authorisation does not make investments risk-free.

FSCS

FSCS protection may apply in certain circumstances if an authorised firm fails. It does not protect against market losses.

Client assets

Regulated firms are generally subject to rules designed to safeguard client money and assets. Arrangements differ by provider.

Nominee accounts

Some shares are held through nominee structures on behalf of customers rather than in your own name on the register.
