Important — this is a personal loan

You remain personally responsible for repayment

A Start Up Loan is taken out by you personally for business purposes. You remain responsible for repaying the loan and interest even if the business stops trading or your plans change. Government backing of the programme does not protect you from repayment.

Basic eligibility

  • Current UK resident
  • Right to work in the UK
  • UK-based business
  • Starting a new business or trading for up to 60 months
  • Subject to credit and affordability checks

  • Unable to secure suitable finance from other sources (self-declaration is OK)
  • Business plan required
  • Cash-flow forecast required

Documents commonly required

  • Business plan
  • Cash-flow forecast
  • Personal identification
  • Bank statements
  • Existing borrowing details
  • Affordability evidence
  • Business information

Requirements can vary by delivery partner and application.

Before choosing

Before choosing a Start Up Loan

Use these prompts before you apply — borrowing creates a personal repayment commitment.

Personal affordability

Can you personally afford the repayments?

Business cash flow

Will the business generate enough cash to support repayments?

Term length

A longer term can reduce monthly payments but increase total interest.

Alternative finance

Would another type of finance better match the purpose?

Personal liability

Understand that the loan remains your personal responsibility.

Commercial alternatives

These are commercial finance providers, not part of the government-backed Start Up Loans programme. Eligibility, pricing, security and personal-guarantee requirements differ by lender.

Suitability

Who may a Start Up Loan suit?

Use current programme rules — not outdated trading-age shortcuts. Approval is never guaranteed.

May be worth considering if

  • You are starting or running an eligible UK business
  • Your business is within current trading-age rules (up to 60 months)
  • You can demonstrate affordability
  • You have a business plan and cash-flow forecast
  • You want funding within £500–£25,000 per applicant
  • You value mentoring support

May be less suitable if

  • Your business falls outside current programme eligibility
  • You need more than £25,000 per applicant
  • You need asset-backed or revolving working-capital finance
  • You cannot demonstrate affordability
  • You want equity rather than debt
  • You may struggle to meet personal repayments

Application

How a Start Up Loan application works

Typical steps — timelines vary and approval is not guaranteed.

  1. Step 1

    Check eligibility

Confirm current programme rules before preparing documents.

  2. Step 2

    Business plan

Explain the business model and how funds will be used.

  3. Step 3

    Cash-flow forecast

    Show how repayments remain affordable.

  4. Step 4

    Credit & affordability

Personal credit and affordability checks apply.

  5. Step 5

    Review

If approved, funds may be released and mentoring may be available. Timelines are not guaranteed.

Before you borrow

Before taking start-up finance

Borrowing creates a fixed cash-flow commitment. Compare total repayable, not only the monthly figure.

  • How much do you genuinely need?
  • Can cash flow support repayments if sales are lower than planned?
  • What is the total repayable, not just the monthly payment?
  • Are you personally liable if the business closes?
  • Is a personal guarantee required on any commercial alternative?
  • Would a grant, asset finance or equity option be more appropriate?

Regulation

Regulation can depend on the borrower and product

Some business lending falls outside the FCA regulatory perimeter, while certain lending to sole traders, small partnerships or other eligible borrowers may be regulated. Check the provider, borrower type and activity. Do not assume every commercial facility is FCA-regulated.
