Loans aimed at people with limited or impaired credit histories can have higher interest rates. Compare the APR, fees and repayment term before applying.

Different types of borrowing

Unsecured personal loans, secured homeowner loans, membership credit and short-term credit are shown in separate sections so lower APRC secured products are not ranked against higher-APR unsecured loans.

Understanding the category

What does “bad credit” mean?

There is no single universal definition of “bad credit”. Lenders use their own criteria, which may include credit score bands, missed payments, defaults, CCJs, limited credit history or a combination of factors. Two lenders can reach different decisions on the same application.

Products on this page are aimed at people with limited, imperfect or rebuilding credit histories. That does not mean every applicant will be accepted, or that every product is suitable for every situation.

Our methodology

How we compare bad credit loans

We compare products using information published by UK lenders — rates, amounts, terms, total cost and eligibility features — so you can weigh affordability side by side.

  • Representative APR
  • Loan amount
  • Repayment term
  • Total amount repayable
  • Soft eligibility checks
  • Funding speed
  • Fees where applicable
  • Early repayment options
  • Whether CCJs may be considered
  • Whether defaults may be considered
  • Whether self-employed applicants may be considered
  • Guarantor requirements where relevant

Eligibility

Who typically qualifies?

Bad credit loan approvals depend on creditworthiness and affordability. Some providers offer a soft eligibility check before a full application. Secured, membership and short-term products are shown separately from unsecured instalment loans.

Usually required

  • Aged 18 or over (some lenders 21+)
  • UK resident
  • Verifiable regular income
  • UK bank or building society account
  • Ability to afford the monthly repayment
  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of address

What lenders may assess

  • Credit history and adverse credit markers
  • Income and expenditure
  • Existing debts and financial commitments
  • Loan amount and term
  • Homeowner status where the product is secured
  • Membership eligibility where the product uses a fixed-fee model

Meeting typical eligibility criteria does not guarantee acceptance. Each lender assesses affordability and creditworthiness and may offer different terms.

Before you apply

Before applying for a bad credit loan

Focus on whether the repayments and total cost are affordable — not the monthly figure alone.

  1. 1Check your credit report for errors or outdated information.
  2. 2Compare the total amount repayable, not only the monthly figure.
  3. 3Confirm the monthly repayment fits your budget after essentials.
  4. 4Review any fees or early repayment conditions.
  5. 5Avoid making several full applications in a short period.
  6. 6Consider whether borrowing can be delayed or reduced.

Review your credit score. If you are already finding debts hard to manage, see free debt advice.

Borrowing costs

How should I compare higher-APR loans?

Lenders price loans according to risk. A limited or impaired credit history may mean a higher interest rate. Focus on APR, fees, repayment term, affordability and total borrowing cost — not eligibility alone.

Compare the total amount repayable and the full term — not the monthly repayment alone.

Representative APR

An example rate for comparison. The rate you receive may differ.

Monthly repayment

The regular amount due under the agreement.

Total amount repayable

Full amount repaid over the term, including interest and relevant fees.

Loan term

A longer term may lower monthly payments but increase total interest.

Fees

Some products may include administration or other charges.

Credit checks

Can I check eligibility without affecting my credit score?

Some lenders offer a soft eligibility check before a full application. Soft and hard searches work differently — and a soft check does not guarantee approval.

Soft search

  • Often used by eligibility tools
  • Helps estimate whether you may qualify
  • Generally not visible to other lenders
  • Does not guarantee acceptance

Hard search

  • May be used on a full application
  • Recorded on your credit history
  • Can be considered by future lenders

A soft eligibility check generally will not affect your credit score. A full application may involve a hard credit search. How credit checks work

Credit history

Can I get a loan after a CCJ or default?

Some lenders may consider applications where a CCJ or default is present, subject to affordability and their own lending criteria. Others may not. “May be considered” does not mean approval is likely or guaranteed.

Use the credit circumstances filters and product details to see which lenders publish that they may consider these situations, then check eligibility carefully before making a full application. See CCJs explained and defaults explained.

Important information

Important things to know

General information only — always confirm current terms with the lender.

  • Missing repayments can result in fees and may further affect your credit history.
  • Secured borrowing may put your home or another asset at risk.
  • Taking out a new loan does not automatically improve your credit score.
  • Borrow only what you need and can afford to repay.

Other options

Alternatives to borrowing

Depending on why you need money, reducing the amount, delaying the expense, using savings or exploring appropriate support may be alternatives. These are general options — not personalised advice.

Credit union

Some credit unions offer smaller loans to eligible members and may assess applications differently from mainstream lenders.

Credit score hub

Credit-builder card

May help demonstrate payment history when used carefully and repaid on time — not a substitute for affordable borrowing.

Compare credit-builder cards

Savings or delaying spend

If the expense is not urgent, waiting or using savings may avoid interest charges.

Family or support network

Where appropriate, support from family may avoid high borrowing costs. Agree clear repayment expectations first.
