What is a default?

A default is usually recorded when an account has not been repaid as agreed for a sustained period and the lender formally marks it as defaulted. It can remain visible to lenders reviewing your file.

How long defaults typically stay

In the UK, defaults typically remain on credit files for six years from the date of default, even once repaid. Always verify details with the relevant credit reference agency.
