Higher-risk products — not mainstream investing

Cryptoassets are high-risk investments and are not equivalent to mainstream investment products such as diversified funds or Stocks & Shares ISAs. Prices can be highly volatile and you should be prepared to lose all the money you invest.

Crypto holdings are generally not protected by the FSCS, and the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) may not apply to cryptoasset services. FCA cryptoasset registration is an AML/CTF (MLR) registration — it is not endorsement and does not guarantee a cryptoasset's value. UK regulatory protections vary by product, provider and legal entity.

Important information

Risks to understand before buying crypto

  • Cryptoassets are high risk.
  • Prices can be extremely volatile.
  • You should be prepared to lose all the money you invest.
  • Crypto investments are generally not protected against market losses by the FSCS. Crypto holdings themselves are generally not FSCS-protected, and FOS may not apply to cryptoasset services.
  • Platform failure can create additional risks.
  • Scams and fraud are common in crypto markets.
  • Some assets may have low liquidity.
  • Staking and yield products carry additional risks.
  • Past performance does not predict future returns.

Cryptoassets are high risk and you should be prepared to lose all the money you invest. FCA cryptoasset registration is an AML/CTF (MLR) registration — it is not an endorsement and does not mean the FCA guarantees a cryptoasset's value. Crypto holdings are generally not protected by the FSCS, and the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) may not apply to cryptoasset services. Fees and features change. This is not personal advice. Confirm current terms and regulatory status on the provider's website and the FCA Register.

Our methodology

How we compare crypto platforms

We compare UK crypto platforms using provider-published fees, GBP funding, supported assets, custody disclosures, security features and UK regulatory status where verified — including trading fees, spreads, maker/taker pricing, gbp funding, deposit and withdrawal costs, supported cryptoassets, custody arrangements, external withdrawals.

Commercial relationships do not determine factual provider information or our editorial guidance.

  • UK-focused editorial research
  • Provider fees checked against official pricing pages
  • UK regulatory status checked against official sources
  • Product features reviewed regularly
  • Risk information reviewed separately from promotional content

Understanding platforms

Crypto exchange, broker or wallet?

Crypto exchange

  • Matches buyers and sellers or provides trading markets
  • Often supports advanced order types
  • Fees may use maker/taker pricing

Crypto broker

  • Provides quoted buy/sell prices
  • Often simpler for beginners
  • Spread may form part of the cost

Custodial wallet

  • Provider controls private keys
  • Easier account recovery
  • Introduces platform/counterparty risk

Self-custody wallet

  • User controls private keys
  • Greater control over transfers
  • Lost credentials may mean permanent loss of access

These categories can overlap. Some platforms offer exchange, broker and wallet functions.

Fees & charges

Understanding crypto platform costs

Maker fee

Fee for orders that add liquidity.

Taker fee

Fee for orders that immediately match existing liquidity.

Spread

Difference between quoted buy and sell prices.

Card purchase fee

May apply when buying using a debit card.

GBP deposit / withdrawal fee

May apply to moving fiat currency.

Network fee

Blockchain charge when transferring crypto externally.

Staking commission

Platform may retain part of staking rewards.

Conversion fee

May apply when converting one cryptoasset to another.

A headline “0% platform fee” does not mean buying or selling crypto is necessarily free.

Custody

Custodial or self-custody?

Custodial

  • Provider controls private keys
  • Account recovery may be easier
  • Platform failure or account restrictions can create additional risk

Self-custody

  • You control private keys
  • Greater control over transfers
  • Losing private keys or recovery phrases may result in permanent loss

Neither approach removes cryptoasset price risk.

Account security

What security features should you look for?

  • Two-factor authentication
  • Withdrawal allowlisting
  • Anti-phishing code
  • Account alerts
  • Login history
  • Withdrawal confirmations
  • Account recovery controls
  • Cold-storage disclosures

Security features can reduce account-access risk, but they cannot prevent cryptoasset prices falling.

Platform risk

What happens if a crypto platform fails?

  • Treatment of assets depends on the provider’s legal and custody structure.
  • Assets may not receive the same protections as bank deposits.
  • Platform insolvency is different from investment-market loss.
  • Users should understand how assets are held.
  • Recovery can depend on legal structure and jurisdiction.

Do not assume crypto holdings receive ordinary bank-deposit protection.

Crypto holdings are generally not protected by the FSCS. FSCS protection also generally does not cover losses caused by cryptoasset prices falling. The Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) may not apply to cryptoasset services. Different protections may apply to particular regulated services or fiat money arrangements, so check the specific product and legal entity. Do not assume crypto holdings receive the same FSCS treatment as cash deposits or mainstream investment accounts.

UK regulation

How crypto platforms are regulated in the UK

Certain UK cryptoasset businesses currently need FCA registration under the Money Laundering Regulations. Cryptoasset financial promotions to UK consumers are subject to FCA rules. Registration does not mean the FCA endorses a cryptoasset or guarantees its value.

FCA cryptoasset registration under the current UK regime is an AML/CTF (MLR) registration. It is not the same as full regulation of all crypto activities and does not mean the FCA endorses the cryptoassets offered.

The broader UK cryptoasset regulatory regime is expected to change from 25 October 2027. Always check current FCA guidance before relying on this summary. Effective date currently referenced: 25 October 2027.
