Higher-risk leveraged products — not mainstream investing

Forex trading through leveraged products can cause rapid losses. In the UK, retail currency trading is often offered via CFDs or spread betting rather than institutional spot forex. UK retail clients may benefit from leverage limits, margin close-out rules and negative balance protection, but can still lose all the money held in their trading account.

Each provider should also display its current percentage of retail investor accounts that lose money when trading CFDs or spread bets with that provider. FCA authorisation does not remove market risk.

Important information

Risks to understand before trading forex

  • Forex trading through leveraged products can cause rapid losses.
  • You can lose all of the money in your trading account, even with negative balance protection.
  • Professional clients can lose more money than they deposit.
  • Currency prices can move quickly and unpredictably, especially around news events.
  • Overnight financing and other charges can erode returns even on flat markets.
  • Slippage and market gaps can affect order fills and stop-losses.
  • Past performance does not predict future results.
  • Products, costs and disclosures can change — always check current terms.

For leverage, margin and retail CFD protections, see CFD Brokers.

Forex trading through leveraged products can cause rapid losses. Eligible UK retail clients may have negative balance protection but can still lose all funds held in a trading account. Professional clients can lose more than they deposit. Fees, spreads and disclosures change. This is not personal advice. Confirm current terms and risk warnings on the provider’s website.

How we compare forex trading platforms

We compare UK forex brokers on currency-trading criteria — including major-pair spreads, commission, fx pair range, trading platforms, mt4 / mt5 availability, tradingview integration, demo accounts, automated trading / eas.

Commercial relationships do not determine factual provider information or our editorial guidance. For multi-market leveraged CFDs — markets, margin, overnight financing and retail protections — see our CFD Brokers comparison.

Currency trading basics

What is forex trading?

Forex trading means taking a view on the exchange rate between two currencies. Use these building blocks when comparing FX brokers and pair coverage.

What is a currency pair?

A currency pair quotes one currency against another (for example EUR/USD). The first currency is the base; the second is the quote.

Major, minor and exotic pairs

Majors typically involve USD and the most liquid currencies. Minors exclude USD but remain relatively liquid. Exotics involve an emerging-market currency and usually have wider spreads.

What is a pip?

A pip is a standard unit of movement in a currency pair — usually the fourth decimal place for most pairs (0.0001), or the second for yen pairs.

In the UK, retail currency trading is often offered through CFDs or spread betting rather than institutional spot forex. This page still focuses on the forex offering — spreads, pairs and FX tools. For how CFDs work as a product across markets, see CFD Brokers.

Spreads & FX costs

How forex spreads and commissions work

Spread

The difference between the buy (offer) and sell (bid) price of a currency pair. A core FX trading cost — often quoted in pips — and can widen in volatile or illiquid conditions.

Commission

A separate per-trade charge, common on raw-spread FX accounts, in addition to a tighter spread. Always compare total cost, not spread alone.

FX conversion

A charge for converting between your account currency and the currency of the pair or instrument you trade.

A tight headline EUR/USD spread does not mean trading is low cost — commission and other charges still matter. Overnight financing (swaps) can add up on positions held overnight; for a fuller explanation of holding costs, margin and leverage, see CFD Brokers.

Forex tools & platforms

MT4 vs MT5 vs TradingView vs broker platforms

Platform choice is a core FX comparison factor — charting, automation and order entry vary widely between brokers.

MT4

Widely used charting and automated-trading environment with a large ecosystem of indicators and Expert Advisors.

MT5

MetaTrader’s newer platform with broader instrument support and updated order/tooling features versus MT4.

TradingView

Charting and social analysis tools; some brokers let you trade from TradingView charts under their own account.

Broker proprietary platforms

In-house web and mobile apps can be simpler for beginners but vary widely in tools, automation and order types.

Order execution

Slippage, market execution and gaps

Execution quality matters when comparing FX brokers — especially around news and thin liquidity.

Slippage

The difference between the price you expected and the price your order was actually filled at. More likely during high volatility or low liquidity.

Stop-loss orders

A standard stop-loss aims to close a position at a set level but is not guaranteed — in fast-moving or gapped markets it can be filled at a worse price.

Guaranteed stop-loss orders

Aims to close a position at the exact level requested, even during gaps, usually for an additional premium charged by the provider.

Market gaps

Prices can 'gap' between one level and another with no trading in between — for example over a weekend or around major news — which can affect standard stops and increase losses.

Leverage, margin and retail protections

UK retail FX is often traded as a leveraged product. We keep the detailed explanations of leverage, margin, overnight financing and retail CFD protections on the CFD Brokers page so this guide stays focused on currency trading.

Leverage & margin

How position size relates to deposit, and why losses can move quickly.

Overnight financing

Holding costs when leveraged FX positions stay open overnight.

Retail protections

Negative balance protection, margin close-out and retail vs professional status.

UK regulation

Checking an FX broker's FCA status

UK firms offering retail FX and CFD trading generally need to be authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) for these activities. Always check the specific legal entity you would be dealing with on the FCA Register — FCA authorisation reduces certain regulatory risks but does not make leveraged trading safe or guarantee you will not lose money.

FSCS and client-money detail for leveraged products is covered on CFD Brokers. FCA authorisation does not remove market risk or guarantee you will not lose money.

Regulatory information last checked: 16 September 2026.

FCA Register · FCA ScamSmart

Scam awareness

Forex scams and offshore brokers

Unregulated 'brokers'

Firms with no genuine FCA authorisation, sometimes cloning the name or reference number of a real firm.

Guaranteed or unusually high returns

Promises of fixed, guaranteed or extremely high returns from trading are a major warning sign — genuine trading involves real risk of loss.

Pressure to deposit more

Being pushed to keep adding funds to 'unlock' withdrawals or cover losses is a common tactic used by fraudulent operations.

Fake trading signals or 'gurus'

Paid signal services or self-styled experts promising consistent profits, often linked to unregulated platforms.

Social media and messaging app recruitment

Unsolicited contact via social media, dating apps or messaging platforms encouraging you to trade or hand over funds to 'manage'.

Cloned or copycat websites

Lookalike sites that copy the branding of genuine, authorised firms to appear legitimate.

Remote access requests

Being asked to install remote-access software so someone can 'help' you trade or withdraw funds.

Withdrawal obstacles

Delays, extra 'fees' or new requirements suddenly appearing when you try to withdraw funds.

Fake recovery services

Offers to recover money lost to a scam in exchange for an upfront fee — often a second fraud targeting previous victims.

Unverifiable track records

Screenshots of profits or account balances that cannot be independently verified through a regulated, audited source.

Treat promises of guaranteed or unusually high trading returns as a major warning sign.

Before you trade

Before choosing a forex broker

  1. 1Check the exact legal entity and its status on the FCA Register
  2. 2Compare major-pair spreads, commission and FX pair range
  3. 3Check whether MT4, MT5, TradingView or a proprietary platform fits how you trade
  4. 4Understand slippage and how market orders are executed
  5. 5Practise on a demo account before risking real money, if available
  6. 6Only risk money you can afford to lose completely
  7. 7Be sceptical of guaranteed returns, unsolicited contact or pressure to deposit more
  8. 8For leverage, margin, overnight financing and retail protections, use our CFD Brokers guide
