What Section 75 covers
Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act can make your credit-card provider jointly liable with the retailer for breaches of contract or misrepresentation on qualifying purchases. It is a valuable UK consumer protection on credit-card spending.
It typically applies to credit-card purchases between £100 and £30,000. It does not cover every payment method — for example, many debit-card or cash purchases fall outside Section 75.
Practical points before you claim
Keep receipts and correspondence. Contact the retailer first where practical, then the card provider if the issue is unresolved. Chargeback schemes can also apply in some cases, with different rules and time limits.
- Confirm the purchase was made on a credit card
- Check the amount falls within qualifying limits
- Keep evidence of the problem and your communications
