What is a Stocks & Shares ISA?

A Stocks & Shares ISA is a tax wrapper. Investments held inside it can grow free of UK capital gains tax and dividend tax within the rules of the allowance.

It does not remove investment risk. The value of stocks, funds and ETFs can fall as well as rise.

Choosing a platform

Compare percentage fees vs flat fees, dealing charges and whether you want ready-made portfolios or DIY funds. For smaller pots, a low or zero platform fee often matters most.

  • Check annual platform charges
  • Confirm Stocks & Shares ISA availability
  • Look at ETF and fund choice
  • Ignore hype — focus on costs and suitability

Risk basics before you invest

Invest money you can leave for several years. Keep an emergency fund in easy-access cash first. Diversify rather than concentrating on a single share.
