Investing in Gold

Gold can be accessed through physical ownership, exchange-traded products or shares in mining companies. Each route has different costs, risks and practical considerations.

Key points

  • Physical, ETF/ETC and mining shares are not economically identical
  • Costs include premiums, spreads, storage, custody and fund fees where relevant
  • Capital is at risk

Three different exposures

Physical gold means owning bullion (coins or bars) with storage, insurance and dealing costs.

Gold ETFs and ETCs provide exchange-traded exposure that may be physically backed or structured differently — read the product documents.

Gold mining shares give you equity in companies that explore or produce gold. Their prices can move differently from the gold price.
