GOLD VS SILVER

Gold vs Silver Storage

Physical gold and silver require secure storage, but their different value per unit of weight means space, transport and insurance considerations can vary significantly.

Neither metal stores itself. The right arrangement depends on how much you hold, how you bought it, access needs and the custody structure behind vaulted bullion.

Last reviewed: 12 August 2026

Value density

Gold generally concentrates more monetary value into less physical space.

Weight & volume

Silver can become heavy and bulky at larger investment values.

Insurance

Coverage depends on the policy and storage arrangement — not assumed.

Custody

Home, safe-deposit and professional vaulting all involve different trade-offs.

SAME £ VALUE

Same investment value, different physical volume

Because silver is worth much less per ounce than gold, the same cash value typically requires significantly more metal — and therefore more space, weight and handling.

Conceptual illustration only — not based on live prices

Same £ value

Au

Gold

Smaller physical volume for the same £ value

A modest secure container may hold a meaningful gold holding.

Same £ value

Silver

Larger physical volume for the same £ value

Vault space, delivery boxes and home storage can become material sooner.

Storage charges that are modest relative to gold can represent a larger percentage of lower-value silver holdings.

STORAGE OPTIONS

Four common storage routes compared

Each option involves different access, cost, insurance, security and counterparty considerations. None is universally best.

  • Home storage

    Access
Immediate physical access at your property
    Cost
Safe or security upgrades; possible policy excess or premium changes
    Insurance
Often limited under standard home policies — check valuables limits and exclusions
    Security
Your responsibility for secure placement and documentation
    Counterparty
No third-party custodian, but theft, fire and policy gaps are your risk
  • Safe-deposit facility

    Access
Branch or facility hours; appointment may be required
    Cost
Annual rental fees; possible weight or box-size limits
    Insurance
May be limited — facility insurance may not cover full bullion value
    Security
Institutional premises, but not a substitute for verifying your own cover
    Counterparty
Facility failure or access restrictions can affect availability
  • Dealer vault

    Access
Varies by dealer; withdrawal may need notice and fees
    Cost
Storage fees, often as a percentage or flat charge
    Insurance
Ask whether cover is included, capped or optional
    Security
Professional vaulting, but terms differ by provider
    Counterparty
Allocated vs unallocated structure matters if the dealer fails
  • Specialist custodian

    Access
Contractual; delivery or collection may involve fees and lead times
    Cost
Custody, audit and insurance fees vary by jurisdiction and service level
    Insurance
Often a core service — verify limits, exclusions and transit cover
    Security
Segregation, audit trails and professional vault standards
    Counterparty
Insolvency and contractual entitlement terms must be read carefully

HOME STORAGE

Keeping bullion at home

Home storage gives direct possession but places security, insurance and record-keeping responsibility on you.

  • Verify whether your home-insurance policy covers bullion, and to what value.
  • Standard policies may exclude or cap valuables including precious metals.
  • Fire, theft and accidental loss may not be fully covered without specific arrangements.
  • Keep purchase invoices, product details and any serial or assay information.
  • Inform yourself about policy storage-location requirements if they exist.

This page does not provide operational security or concealment advice. Focus on insurance, documentation and realistic risk assessment.

VAULT STORAGE

Professional vaulting and dealer custody

Vaulted bullion can reduce home-security concerns but introduces custody fees, contractual terms and counterparty questions.

  • Is bullion allocated to you or held on an unallocated basis?
  • Is metal segregated from other clients' holdings?
  • Who is the legal owner under the contract?
  • What insurance applies, and to what limit?
  • Are audits or statements provided?
  • What are withdrawal, delivery and jurisdiction terms?
  • What happens if the provider becomes insolvent?

Read custody agreements carefully. Vault marketing is not a substitute for understanding your legal position.

OWNERSHIP

Allocated vs unallocated bullion

Allocated

Specific bars or coins are identified or held for you under the custody arrangement, rather than as a general pool balance alone.

Unallocated

You may hold a contractual entitlement against a provider rather than title to individually identified bullion.

Ask before you buy

  • Is specific bullion identified in your name or account?
  • Is it segregated from the provider's general stock?
  • Can you inspect statements or serial numbers where applicable?
  • What insolvency protections exist under the contract?
  • Can you take physical delivery, and on what terms?

Allocated and unallocated structures can affect outcomes if a dealer or custodian fails. This is educational information, not legal advice.

INSURANCE

Is your bullion insured?

Insurance is not automatic. Whether cover exists — and to what amount — depends on where and how bullion is stored.

  • Home-insurance valuables limits and bullion exclusions
  • Single-item or high-value caps
  • Theft, fire and transit cover
  • Vault or custodian insurance limits and exclusions
  • Whether cover is replacement-value or another basis
  • Storage-location requirements in the policy

MoneyHelper notes that insurance policies often have specific limits for valuables including gold and silver. Check the actual policy rather than assuming full cover.

DELIVERY & TRANSPORT

Delivery and transport: gold vs silver

Gold

  • Higher value is often concentrated in smaller, lighter packages.
  • Secure courier and insurance still matter, but volume is usually modest.
  • Discreet packaging and tracked delivery are common dealer practices.

Silver

  • Greater weight and bulk for the same £ value.
  • Parcel weight limits, handling fees and multiple shipments can apply.
  • Delivery and return-shipping costs can become material as holdings grow.
  • Use insured, tracked delivery where offered.
  • Confirm who bears risk in transit — buyer, seller or courier.
  • Check whether home or vault insurance covers bullion in transit.
  • Keep delivery notes and packaging records with purchase invoices.

RECORDS

Documentation worth keeping

Clear records support insurance claims, resale and ownership verification.

  • Purchase invoices and payment records
  • Product descriptions, weights and fineness
  • Mint, refiner or serial numbers where applicable
  • Assay certificates or certificates of authenticity
  • Vault or custody statements and allocation confirmations
  • Insurance schedules and policy endorsements
  • Delivery notes and courier tracking references

Documentation does not guarantee resale value, but gaps can complicate insurance, authentication and later dealing.

FAQ

Gold vs silver storage — common questions

Gold generally requires less physical space for the same £ value. Silver can become heavy and bulky sooner, which can affect home storage, vault fees and delivery. Both need appropriate security and insurance.
Physically you can, but insurance, custody contracts and resale handling may treat products differently. Separate records for each product type are prudent.
Not necessarily. Many policies limit or exclude valuables including precious metals. Check insured limits, exclusions and any storage requirements before relying on cover.
Allocated storage generally means specific bullion is identified or held for you under the custody arrangement, as opposed to a general balance against the provider.
Unallocated storage may mean a contractual entitlement against a provider rather than title to individually identified bars or coins. Insolvency treatment can differ — read the agreement.
Fees vary by provider and structure, but silver's lower value per unit can mean storage costs represent a larger share of the holding than for gold.
It may suit some holdings, but check box size and weight limits, access hours, facility insurance and whether your own policy covers contents stored off-premises.
Outcomes depend on whether bullion was allocated and segregated, insurance arrangements and insolvency law. Ask these questions before placing metal with a custodian.
