Breakdown cover vs car insurance

Why roadside assistance is not the same as motor insurance, and when it is included, optional or a separate policy.

Features, cover levels, exclusions and prices vary by provider. Cover is subject to underwriting and terms. Quotes depend on personal or business circumstances. Always check the provider’s documentation before buying.

Different jobs

Car insurance is there for injury, property damage and, at higher cover levels, damage to your own vehicle. Breakdown cover is roadside assistance — typically recovery, roadside repair or onward travel if the car will not go. One does not automatically replace the other.

Included, extra, or separate

Some motor policies include a basic breakdown benefit. Others sell it as an optional extra. Specialist breakdown providers sell standalone cover at different levels, such as roadside only, national recovery or European cover. Check the level, call-out limits and whether cover is for the car, the people, or both.

What breakdown usually will not do

Breakdown assistance does not normally pay for accident damage, theft or third-party injury claims. If the car is damaged in a collision you will usually still need the motor policy. If you only need a recovery after a mechanical failure, that is closer to breakdown cover.
