No-claims bonus explained

How a no-claims discount is earned, what a claim can do to it, and what ‘protected’ NCB usually means.

Features, cover levels, exclusions and prices vary by provider. Cover is subject to underwriting and terms. Quotes depend on personal or business circumstances. Always check the provider’s documentation before buying.

Claim-free years as a discount

A no-claims bonus (also called a no-claims discount) is a reduction some motor insurers apply when you build up years without a claim that affects the discount. The percentage, the maximum number of years recognised, and the proof they want all vary by insurer.

A claim can step it back

A fault claim, or a non-fault claim where the insurer cannot recover costs, can reduce the discount — often by more than one year. Some claims, such as certain windscreen repairs, may be treated differently. The only reliable source is that insurer’s NCB scale.

Protected NCB is not protected premium

Paying to protect a no-claims bonus may let you keep the discount years after a limited number of claims. It does not freeze the premium and it does not stop the insurer considering the claim at renewal. Read how many claims the protection allows and what happens after that.
