Comprehensive vs third-party car insurance

What fully comprehensive, third-party fire and theft, and third-party only typically cover — and why a lower cover level is not always a lower quote.

Features, cover levels, exclusions and prices vary by provider. Cover is subject to underwriting and terms. Quotes depend on personal or business circumstances. Always check the provider’s documentation before buying.

The three common levels

Third-party only is the legal minimum in the UK. It is aimed at injury or damage you cause to other people and their property. Third-party fire and theft adds cover if your car is stolen or damaged by fire. Comprehensive usually also covers damage to your own car, including accidents that are your fault, subject to the policy terms, excesses and exclusions.

Comprehensive is not a blank cheque

Fully comprehensive still has limits. Wear and tear, mechanical breakdown, and some personal-belongings claims are commonly excluded. Optional extras such as courtesy cars, legal cover or windscreen cover may sit on top of the core level. Always check what is included, optional or not stated — not the product name alone.

Price does not always follow the label

Comprehensive quotes are sometimes cheaper than third-party quotes for the same driver. Insurers price for risk, not only for the name of the cover. Compare the level you actually need, the excess, and the extras you would use, then request a personalised quote.
