Professional indemnity explained

How PI cover responds to advice or service errors, who typically needs it, and how it differs from public liability.

Features, cover levels, exclusions and prices vary by provider. Cover is subject to underwriting and terms. Quotes depend on personal or business circumstances. Always check the provider’s documentation before buying.

Mistakes in advice or service

Professional indemnity insurance is aimed at claims that your advice, design or professional service caused a client financial loss. It is common in consulting, accountancy, architecture, IT and similar trades. It is not a substitute for public liability, which is aimed at injury and property damage.

Claims-made wording

Many PI policies are written on a claims-made basis: cover usually needs to be in force when the claim is made, not only when the work was done. Run-off cover can matter if you close or sell the business. Retroactive dates can exclude older work. Those mechanics are in the wording, not the product name.

Contracts and limits

Clients and frameworks often specify a minimum PI limit. That contractual figure may be higher than you would buy on your own. Check the limit of indemnity, excess, territorial limits and any trade-specific exclusions before you compare quotes.
