Public liability insurance explained

Who public liability is for, how it differs from employers’ liability, and why venues often ask for a minimum limit.

Features, cover levels, exclusions and prices vary by provider. Cover is subject to underwriting and terms. Quotes depend on personal or business circumstances. Always check the provider’s documentation before buying.

The basic idea

Public liability insurance is aimed at claims from members of the public or clients who say your business activity caused injury or property damage. It does not usually cover injury to your own employees — that is closer to employers’ liability.

Limits and contracts

Many venues and principal contractors specify a minimum limit of indemnity. That contractual figure is not the same as a legal requirement for every self-employed person. Check what your work actually requires.

Related covers

Professional indemnity deals with advice or service errors that cause financial loss. Product liability deals with goods you supply. Read the wording so you know which claims sit where.
