For most overseas trips the expensive risk is emergency medical treatment and getting you home. Policies set medical limits, excesses and rules for pre-existing conditions. Undeclared conditions are a common reason claims are reduced or declined. An EHIC or GHIC, where it applies, is not a substitute for travel insurance.
Cancellation and curtailment cover trip costs if you cannot travel for a listed reason. Baggage cover has single-item and valuables limits that are easy to exceed with a phone or camera. Adventure sports, winter sports and working abroad are often excluded unless you add them.
A cheap policy that excludes your destination, cruise, pregnancy or sport is not cheap. Check the territorial limits, the maximum trip length, and whether COVID-19 or travel-advice exclusions apply at the time you buy. Then compare participating providers.
